Why Blog About Wallbeds?

Wallbed Blog

Blog type

Because, people looking for wallbeds or Murphy Beds can find us pretty easily.  It is reaching the people who DON’T KNOW they need us that is the trick.

Many times while working at our display in Costco, we would hear, “I didn’t know they still made those!” “What is that?” “I never thought about that.”

These are who we are trying to reach with our blog:

  • People who are frustrated with their current unused guest room.
  • People who are downsizing and can’t see having a bed take up so much space 24/7.
  • People who live in studio apartments and want it to feel like a one bedroom.
  • Retirees.  Students. Newlyweds.  Single folks.
  • For occasional use or daily use.

We have been getting pointers from both The Sales Lion and The Story of Telling.  We are trying to balance informative with anecdotal entries in order to answer those “out there” kind of questions. Let us know if there is anything you would like us to answer…in regards to wallbeds or Murphy Beds.

Now you see it. Now you DON’T!

What is Particle Board?

Particle board has gotten a bad rap over the years and is commonly thought of as sub-par or inferior to “real wood.” Guess what particle board is made of…..ready?….Real Wood!

Particle board is maybe from the byproducts of wood used in the timber industry. It is shredded and dried then mixed with adhesives.  This mixture is rolled out and pressed under great force and heat into long sheets of standard thicknesses.  The sheets are cut to length then stacked and ready to be used.  In the past, formaldehyde was a key ingredient in the adhesive but that is no longer the case.

Particle Board Examples

The pressing of the material is varied to create different densities of material. Think about those Space Bags which are used for storing clothes. Put a sweater in one and seal it up. Measure the thickness and feel how floppy the bag is.  Now, open it up and fill it with 4 more sweaters. Vacuum the air out until it is as thick as the bag with one regular sweater.  As you pull the air out, the sweaters compress and the contents become denser.  Pick it up now.  It is the same thickness as the other, but I bet it is not as floppy as the uncompressed single sweater.  The same goes for particle board.  We use a grade which is denser than regular-use material.  This makes for a stronger wallbed cabinet for our customers.

After the particle board is ready it is covered, repressed and heated with decorative papers and come out looking like a whole forest of wood varieties.  Or they can be solid colors, patterned… the possibilities are endless!  These finished boards handle a lot of wear and clean up easily with mild soap and water.

Many advances have been made across the industry to insure the product is durable and safe.  We use products which have been certified by FSC- The Forest Stewardship Council.  The FSC, ”sets standards for responsible forest management. A voluntary program, FSC uses the power of the marketplace to protect forests for future generations.”  (https://us.fsc.org/index.htm)

Now you see it. Now you DON’T!

Affordable Space Solutions for Boomerang Kids

Does investing in a Murphy Wallbed make sense when grads must live with their parents?  Is your college graduate returning without a job yet, and need a place to stay?  A wallbed can be the solution to your (hopefully!) temporary problem.

Today’s headline reads that 21 million, (that is: 21 x 1,000 x 1,000!!!) children between the ages of 18 and 31 live at home with their parents.  You may be one such parent.  (August 2013)

Home sweet home!

Home sweet home!

Most likely a returning son or daughter might find his/her room converted into an office or re-done in some fashion to suit your practical needs.  A standard room with even a twin bed might be hopelessly small when piled up with suitcases and boxes full of books and your offspring’s personal belongings.

Why not exchange the old bed for a Murphy wallbed? Add a desktop and a cabinet or file drawer while you’re at it?

A Pivoting Library Murphy Bed is the most practical and perfect answer to your circumstances!

However, whether you choose Horizontal or Vertical Platform wall unit or go for a Library bed, your family will whole-heartedly embrace you for being proactive!  Your insight brings satisfaction and keeps both order and harmony in the family!

The day will come when your son or daughter lands that job and moves into his/her own domain.  The wallbed can move, too, and whatever cabinetry as well!  It gives them a head start on furnishing their living space!  In addition, it gives you an opportunity to find a new use for the abandoned room.  Maybe get another wallbed?

And for friends who read and bring a printed copy of this blog to The Great American Wallbed Co., they will receive $ 100.00 in-house discount!  We care!

“Murphy Beds/ Wallbeds vs. Sleeper Sofa” or “Comfort vs. Misery”

I visited my family in Washington D.C. during this week’s East-Coast heat-wave, (July 2013). I can personally attest to several down sides of having to resort to a foldout sleeper sofa I would have MUCH preferred the instant comfort of a pull-down Murphy Wallbed.

sleeper sofa failWater from the overworked air conditioner poured through the plastered ceiling in the quaint, old brown-stone three-level home. The unit decided to quit as the temperature peaked well past perspiration glow – we were in full-blown dripping sweat mode!  The upstairs bedrooms were sweltering. We needed to change sleeping quarters. This meant resorting to the hide-a bed sleeper sofa in the daylight-basement. Since the mattress is only a miserly 2-inch pad, the metal frame  support underneath creates ongoing misery for the average-size adult who tries sleeping both lengthwise, diagonally, and even crosswise. Sound sleep is hard, (ooh, ohhh, oww!) and nearly impossible to achieve. (Hint: A better solution would be sleeping on the floor on top of the cushions.)

On the other hand, a Murphy Wallbed has up to a 12 inch mattress, of your own choosing! No cushions to stack on the floor and re-position in the morning; no metal bar pressing into your spine or lower back or legs; and no need for tossing, turning, or ending up crosswise; or, for that matter, cross!

Once you wake up from a comfortable night’s sleep, simply get up, and close the wallbed with one finger- instantly creating an ordered environment.  If you have the additional feature of a fold-out table on the front of your Platform Wallbed, you can set up your home-office while the coffee is brewing.  Voila! (French for ta-dah!) It’s gonna be a gooood day!

Can I Get a Wallbed/ Murphy Bed Inside a High-rise, Up a Winding Staircase, or Into a Closet?

These questions have been asked many times during our Costco Special Events. So let me answer it this way:  wherever there’s an opening, there’s a way to get your Wallbed/Murphy Bed in. It may seem impossible to get a Wallbed/ Murphy Bed up a High-rise or tight winding staircases, or in a closet. “But,” you may say, “I have a tight stairway that turns and turns and turns again.” Stay encouraged! Our experienced installers outsmart any challenge, obstacle, and impossible egress every day.  Where there is a will, there’s a way to accomplish the task at hand.

tight stairsThere have been staircases where a Wallbed/Murphy Bed has been carried up piece-by-piece, in addition to toolbox, ladder, and other necessities.  It may take a while longer, but since you are not paying for installation by the hour, but it doesn’t matter! At the end of the day, your Wallbed will be installed and ready for use.

A High-rise usually has a utility elevator big enough for an un-assembled Wallbed/Murphy Bed.  In such cases, access is a cinch! If there’s no elevator in your situation, installers will do whatever it takes to get your Wallbed in place. They will even go and survey your particular situation beforehand in order to avoid unpleasant surprises.

Do you want your Wallbed installed in an existing closet? That, too, can be done.  There might be a need for some minor adjustment to the opening for an added expense, so this needs to be discussed beforehand.

All is possible for he who believes; we believe all is possible!  We are The Great American Wallbed Company, Bellevue, WA!

Is Adding a Wall Bed or Murphy Bed to your Home an INVESTMENT or a COST?

When you invest in a Wallbed or Murphy Bed, your return on a $3,000.00 investment can be almost 5 times your original money!

Your stationary, standard Queen bed, takes at least 35 sq. feet of space and is costing you anywhere from $200.00 per square foot up to a median Seattle price of $428.00 per square foot (June 2013).  This calculates as a value ranging from $7,000.00 to $15,000.00! Wow! And that doesn’t include the cost of heating and cooling a single purpose room all year!

dollar%20house

Furthermore, with a wallbed, you don’t need to add a room!  Do a quick calculation of what a 10×10 addition will cost in this market.  Yup: between $25,000.00 and $50,000.

A Queen-size wall bed/Murphy bed is roughly 67″ x 88″ when open but when it is closed, it takes a measly 8.5 square feet of floor space!  Trulia will show you! Seattle home values, listing prices, average and median sale prices, and Average price per square foot for Seattle WA was $428, an increase of 43.1%. (Seattle P.I. article) In the Greater Puget Sound area, the price per square foot ranges from $250 on up to the $700 –$ 800 dollar range (June 2013).  In other words, the space your conventional bed requires equals $28,000, more or less!

Please, do your own search in your local market.  This is the reality in the greater Seattle area!

Now, go into your guest bedroom and look at that bed taking up expensive real estate! Call Salvation Army, donate the bed, and get a tax write-off!  Invest $3,000.00 (more or less) and gain space worth up to 5 times that! It’s the thing $avvy $hoppers do now.

Are you a condo dweller?  You don’t have the choice to add on!  You love where you live and you don’t want to move.  A small investment in a wallbed gains you both additional space and adds value per square foot. Check it out for yourself!

How else can you pick up 35 square feet of livable space for $3,000.00?

Check out The Great American Wallbed Co. for more ways for you to increase your home’s value!
